Healthcare
We are facing a crisis in healthcare in Alabama.
-
Alabama is getting about $200 million in funding for rural hospitals for 2026, but losing an estimated $600 million from Medicaid cuts that will hit those very same hospitals. That’s a net negative of $400 million, but we are told they have "saved" our rural hospitals. Nonsense.
-
Five hospitals have closed their labor and delivery units and several have shut down everything except their ER. We may lose 20 or more hospitals in the next few years.
-
Everything from rural hospitals, to veteran care, to pre-natal care is being stretched too thin. Some residents face a drive of an hour or longer to reach a hospital.
-
Insurance for Alabama families is heading through the roof, whether you receive your coverage through your employer, or HealthCare.gov, or through the open market.
Alabama should have expanded Medicaid long ago, and not doing so has lost us over $8 billion, while pushing our healthcare costs beyond what many can afford. The current legislature has refused to do this year after year. Imagine what we could have achieved for affordable healthcare in Alabama with that money! And remember, your federal taxes went to pay for better and more affordable healthcare in the other states that took the Medicaid expansion: that's reason enough right there to replace the current leadership in Montgomery!
